Separate the session from the character
Crossplay lets the group enter the same online activity. Cross-progression or cross-save decides whether one character and its progress can follow you to another platform.
RPGs range from solo story epics to massive online worlds, so crossplay support is far from universal here. Co-op and online RPGs increasingly let friends play together across PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch, while narrative-driven single-player RPGs simply do not need it. This list shows which role-playing games share progression and multiplayer across platforms.
Editorial guide
In online RPGs, “crossplay” is only the first compatibility check. Playing in the same party, using the same character on another device, and accessing purchases after moving platforms are separate questions. A group can be ready to hunt together while one player still needs to choose the right account or buy the right platform licence.

An account link can be permanent or can select a primary account. Confirm which character, service account or sub-account will be used before completing that step.
Owning an RPG on one system does not automatically grant access on another. Expansions, subscriptions and cosmetic purchases can follow different rules from the multiplayer connection.
These are practical cases documented by the respective publisher or developer. They are not a ranking, and the individual game page remains the current crossplay-status reference.
The same service account can be used across supported versions, but the base game and expansions must be registered for each platform. Windows and Steam cannot be registered to the same service account.
Grinding Gear Games documents full crossplay and cross-progression, but its account system still separates some platform purchases. In particular, PlayStation microtransactions are unavailable on other platforms.
Capcom documents crossplay for the PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series versions. Confirm that Crossplay is enabled before searching for a lobby or sharing a lobby ID with the group.
Reviewed against publisher or developer support material in October 2026. Account, licence and online rules can change, so check each linked game page before buying an expansion or linking an established account.
Only online and co-op RPGs tend to offer crossplay. Single-player story RPGs generally have no multiplayer at all, so the question does not apply to them.
Crossplay and cross-save are different features. A game can let you play together across platforms without letting you carry the same save between them. Each game page notes both where known.
