Use the same edition
A game can have several editions or storefront versions. Minecraft is the clearest example: this guide’s cross-platform advice applies to Bedrock Edition.
Survival games live and die by their co-op sessions, so crossplay decides whether you and your friends can share a base no matter what hardware you own. Many of the genre's biggest sandboxes now sync servers across PC and consoles, though some keep saves and worlds tied to a single platform. Use this list to plan your next multiplayer world.

Crossplay answers one narrow question: whether people on different systems can join the same online session. It does not automatically mean that saves transfer, every edition can join, or that a private server is configured for every platform. For a group starting a new world, those details matter more than a generic “yes”.

For a dedicated server, the host must use Valheim’s crossplay backend. Its official FAQ also distinguishes crossplay from cross-platform save progression.
Reviewed against publisher or developer support material in October 2026. Platform availability and online rules can change with a patch, so the individual game page remains the place to check the current status.
When a survival game supports crossplay, players on different platforms can usually join the same server or session. Whether the world itself transfers between platforms is a separate cross-save question.
If your friends are on the same platform, you do not need crossplay. It only matters when the group is split across PC, PlayStation, Xbox or Switch.
